Guardianship

  1. What is a guardianship?
A guardianship of the person is where the court appoints an adult person (not the parent) to have custody, make decisions and care for a minor child.

  2. What do I need to do to start the process to file for guardianship?
Before starting the process, you will need to acquire a copy of the minor child’s birth certificate. Certain relatives or the minor can obtain a copy at the Recorder’s Office in the county where the minor was born. A copy of the birth certificate will need to be filed with the court to have a guardianship granted.
