Self-Help Legal Access Center (SHLAC): Online Assistance

The Self-Help Legal Access Center is now offering on-line assistance to Self-Represented Litigants through its new Internet Services Program (ISP). With the ISP, you can register for an interactive video workshop or conference, e-mail questions to Self-Help staff, use forms-completion programs and have court forms e-mailed to you.

In the video workshops, a SHLAC staff member can provide information on how to fill out court forms, review completed forms, and explain court process and procedure.

At this time, the SHLAC ISP is available for the following types of cases:

  • Civil Harassment Restraining Order
  • Petition for Dismissal of Misdemeanors & Infractions (Expungement)
  • Guardianship
  • Conservatorship
  • Unlawful Detainer

To begin the process, please complete and submit the ISP QUESTIONNAIRE (CUESTIONARIO PARA ISP). A SHLAC staff member will contact you within two business days with instructions on how to proceed. On the Questionnaire, please remember to include a valid e-mail address. In order to correctly use and complete court forms, you will also need Adobe Reader. Self-Help Legal Access Center (SHLAC): Walk-in Assistance

The Self-Help Legal Access Center provides informational assistance to self-represented litigants in the following types of civil cases: Unlawful Detainer, Collection, Guardianship and Conservatorship, Civil Harassment Restraining Order, Name Change, Step-Parent Adoption and Expungements of misdemeanors and infractions only. The Self-Help Center does NOT assist with all types of civil cases. Specifically, the Self-Help Center does NOT assist litigants with initiating civil law suits, small claims cases, criminal matters, probate decedent estates and trust issues, and appeals and writs.

Self-Help Center staff can help you with selecting and completing the appropriate forms and providing you with general legal information and information regarding the status of your case. Self-Help Center staff does not represent you in court, does not provide legal advice and cannot assist you if you are currently being represented by an attorney. Communications between you and the Self-Help Center staff are NOT confidential. You will be helped on a "first-come first-served" basis. As Spanish interpreters cannot be guaranteed, those in need of an interpreter should provide their own as well as someone who can help them to complete the forms in English.
